Celebrating our Neighborhood Traditions this Chinese New Year

At Farmers & Distillers, our Mt Vernon Square neighborhood offers our culinary team a wide array of inspiration, right here in the middle of downtown DC. We are lucky to have the cultural and culinary influence of our nearby Chinatown neighborhood to help guide our chefs when creating our menus.

We are celebrating that influence with the start of Chinese New Year 2019 on February 5th. Marking the Year of the Pig, representing wealth and generosity, we will be celebrating with our neighborhood friends on Sunday, February 10, 2019, when downtown DC comes alive with the annual Chinese New Year Parade beginning at 2pm and heading down H Street, NW, between 6th and 8th Streets.

As we sit just steps from the parade route, we invite you to join us for brunch before enjoying all the sights and sounds the parade has to offer – from the Chinese lions and dragons dancing along H Street to the beautiful red lacquered drums/musicians marching down the parade route or spectators cheering on the Chinese Youth Club of Washington as these talented kids twirl a traditional Chinese yo-yo, aka the diabolo.

Or join us for dinner following your afternoon of revelry. We are serving plenty of delicious, scratch-made fare inspired by our neighborhood. From our Sticky Pork Riblets to our Pan-Fried Dumplings to our Hand-Pulled Noodles to our famous Chinese Fried Chicken, we have something for everyone. Continue the celebration with a sampling of our award-winning craft cocktails from our in-house distillery, Founding Spirits.

For such celebratory meals, and every day occasions, we advise guests to make reservations with us.

If you choose to skip the parade and enjoy your Chinese New Year taking in a traditional Chinese performance, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage is featuring two amazing shows: the Guangdong National Orchestra Ensemble playing traditional Chinese folk music on February 7th; and the award-winning Guangdong Arts Troupe Chinese dance, acrobatics, and puppetry theatrical performance on February 8th.

As our Farmers & Distillers sibling restaurant, Farmers Fishers Bakers, is located right at the Washington Harbour, our team is happy to serve you before or after enjoying one of these Chinese New Year-centric Kennedy Center performances. As always, we recommend making a reservation.

“This Place is BEAUTIFUL,” Says One of Atlanta’s Real Housewives

Farmers & Distillers was featured in the latest episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, the blockbuster reality TV show that has been running on Bravo for over a decade.

Episode 9 of their 11thseason – “A Mother’s Love” – first aired on December 30th and features supermodel Cynthia Bailey taking her daughter, Noelle, to college at Howard University. Their final farewell meal takes place after the Howard University pinning ceremony at none other than Farmers & Distillers.

The reality show’s stars enjoyed our scratch sodas, Seafood & Green FS Vodka Sauce, our version of the plant-based Impossible Burger, which The Washington Post has called “downright delicious,” and a Farmers & Distillers dish Bailey called “steak-fried chicken,” which turns into a funny conversation between Bailey and Noelle’s father, Leon Robinson, because it is actually our popular Chicken-Fried Steak.

Of course, we knew the show was going to be airing at some point and helped the Bravo production team set up the shoot, but we couldn’t be happier with how much they loved Farmers & Distillers, the ambiance, as well as the food and drink. It was fun for all of us to see and hear.

Check out the entire show or fast-forward to the 37-minute mark to see our Real Housewives four+ minutes of fame and hear the stunning Bailey say, “This place is BEAUTIFUL.”

AND of course, stop by to see if you agree and replicate The Real Housewives meal or make your own selections from our menu. If possible, we recommend making a reservation.

A Perfect DC December Night

Enjoying The Washington Ballet’s spectacular performance of The Nutcracker is a great way to add a little more Christmas spirit to this year’s holiday season. For many Washington, D.C. area residents and visitors, it is an important annual tradition.

Farmers & Distillers is a short distance away from the historic downtown Warner Theater that now hosts what has become DC’s most celebrated local ballet performance. Joining us for a bite before the show is a great way to extend your holiday fun. Or, perhaps even better, stopping by afterwards for a drink, dessert, and some time to talk about this amazing, classic storytelling, and DC-centric dance performance, may make for a perfect DC December night.

At Farmers & Distillers, our inspiration has always been George Washington. Evident across our restaurant, from our menu to our art, our love for our first president and all of our founding fathers and farmers is relevant to us every day, but it is also a great connection to this iconic, DC version of The Nutcracker.

While The Washington Ballet has been performing The Nutcracker for decades, in 2004, the company premiered a new, all-American version by then Artistic Director Septime Webre, designed just for Washington, D.C. The audience is transported back in time to a Georgetown mansion where party guests include Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson, with General Washington as the heroic Nutcracker.

And where better to extend your DC holiday celebrations with this particular take on The Nutcracker other than Farmers & Distillers?

We hope you will join us. Please be aware reservations are recommended, but not required. Tickets to this unique take on a holiday classic, DC’s very own The Nutcracker, are available online.
