New Menus for Downtown Diners Just in Time for the 4th

The week-long Fourth of July festivities just got even better as Farmers & Distillers has released all new menus that feature many of our restaurant specialties and guest favorites, including some big news: more beloved choices from our sibling restaurants.

Diners will notice the addition of Founding Farmers Reuben Melt and Farmers Fishers Bakers Roasted Vegetable sandwich, as well as our Founding Farmers perennial guest favorite starter, Glazed Bacon Lollis.

Also of interest is our Southern Fried Chicken & Donut, a delicious nod to the famous Founding Farmers Chicken & Waffles. Using Bell & Evans chicken, Farmers & Distillers is offering our fried chicken with a twist. For lunch and dinner, instead of a waffle on the side, it comes with one of our maple glazed donuts, made fresh in small batches throughout the day. Be sure to save room for both. Breakfast Chicken & Waffles will be available on the breakfast menu.

Steak House choices, including select cuts of beef, are now primarily coming from family-owned J.W. Treuth, who work directly with Pennsylvania cattle farmers to ensure we are getting the highest quality meat. There are also delicious and sustainable seafood choices, a great grouping of burgers and sandwiches, and some of the best garden-fresh salads in town.

Our Baker’s Pizza uses dough made from North Dakota Winter Wheat in a two-day process, just like our bread. It is tender and chewy, with the perfect amount of crust, creating what we think is the very best pizza. Our new menu includes a slice of pizza with a side salad, which can make for the perfect lunch.

Everyone has their own comfort foods. Pizza may be one of them. Or not. This menu shares some of our Co-Owner Dan Simons’ favorites, such as the Impossible Meatloaf, a tasty vegetarian recipe using the plant-based Impossible Burger served with mashed potatoes and sautéed green vegetables, and our Spaghetti Squash Pomodoro, a delicious medley of roasted squash, roasted garlic tomato sauce, and pecorino.

Other highlights include our hand-pulled Chinese shop style noodles, an array of noodle dishes with lamb, beef & pork meatballs, chicken, or beef combinations. Of course, we will continue to have a whole host of our fresh, house-made donuts, including a new favorite flavor, cinnamon roll.

As always, our craft cocktail menu is sure to delight many with a creative, yet classic array of drinks, many made with our very own Founding Spirits, distilled here in-house, including our award winning craft vodka and Arroyo’s “Never Bitter” Amaro.

With all of our menus, we work hard to make sure there is something for everyone and we continue to make everything from scratch using ingredients primarily sourced from American family farmers we know.

However you plan to spend this Star-Spangled Banner time of year, we have new choices and old favorites, including cool and tasty drinks, and delicious food. We are also super close to all of the Fourth of July celebrations on the mall!

SAVOR & Sip Six Selections from Alewerks

Great news, beer lovers. Farmers & Distillers is pre-gaming what The Washington Post describes as “the gold standard” of beer festivals, SAVOR.

On Tuesday, May 29th from 5-7pm, we are hosting a Tap Takeover featuring six selections from Alewerks Brewery Company to celebrate. Three Alewerks brews will be available for tasting: Superb IPA, Chesapeake Pale Ale, and Tavern Brown Ale. And we will offer three limited releases for purchase on draft: Jalapeño Weekend Lager, Pancake House Stout, and Secret Admirer DIPA.

Head on down to DC’s Mt Vernon Square to our bar and Pleasure Garden on Tuesday night for a small taste of what will be coming your way at SAVOR.

This year’s SAVOR – held June 1-2 at the nearby National Building Museum – will host 90 small and independent craft breweries from around the country showcasing 181 beers, each one thoughtfully paired with a small plate that will dazzle your palate. Tickets are available online.

What’s A ZooFari?

Last night, Farmers & Distillers joined nearly 100 of the top DC area restaurants and vintners for a premier culinary event in a very unusual setting: the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. In the wild habitats of so many of our favorite resident animals, guests were wined and dined at an unforgettable fundraiser to support our zoo and all of its amazing species.

ZooFari included exotic animal encounters, food sculptors, and a silent auction featuring exclusive paintings made by DC’s famous panda family Mei Xiang, Tian Tian, and Bei Bei. Guests were given after-hours access to the Small Mammal House and the Reptile Discovery Center. In addition to the growls of lions and the calls of orangutans, the evening included live entertainment from the chef that rocks, DJ Chef—champion of the Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen— and renowned dance band DC Fusion, as well as classically trained violinist Ben Hoyt.

Part of the ZooFari experience included food and beverage tastings from top DC culinarians. Our Farmers & Distillers team was on hand, hanging with the animals and the animal lovers, while serving one of our house favorites, Crunchy Ahi Tuna Bites. It was a roaring good time.

Get Your Soft-Shell Crabs at Farmers & Distillers

Farmers & Distillers is celebrating the end of spring and the start of summer with two soft-shell crab dishes.

That’s right. It is soft-shell crab season here in the nation’s capital. We all know our fine neighbors in Maryland are famous for their delicious crabs. Early in the season, those crabs are harvested at peak time and make for some of the region’s very best culinary offerings.

We are serving a soft-shell crab sandwich for $18 and an entrée for $30. Our Maryland soft-shell crabs are lightly battered and fried. The sandwich includes our famous bacon, lettuce and tomato, on a house-made bun, with a side of our tasty tartar sauce and choice of one of our crop sides. Our entrée includes two Maryland soft-shell crabs, served with a choice of two of our crop sides and our tasty house-made tartar sauce.

Both are delicious ways to celebrate this special time of year and will be available for a limited time only. So, scurry down to Mt Vernon Square for some tasty soft-shells. If possible, we recommend making a reservation.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Farmers & Distillers All Week Long

Starting today, it’s officially Cinco de Mayo at Farmers & Distillers. We are jumping right into our festival of tequila, which will include a special Saturday visit from the brand ambassadors at Patrón.

The sun is shining. The temps are rising. The tequila is flowing. It’s going to be a good week.

Come on by Saturday, May 5th from 4-6pm, to hang out with us and our friends from Patrón to talk and taste tequila.

Or join us any day this week, today through Sunday, May 6. We will be serving three very special craft cocktails. For a tasty take on the classic Mule, try our Mule de Fresa with Altos blanco tequila, ginger, lime, strawberry, and mezcal. For something a little sweeter, we have our Strawberry-Ginger Blended Margarita with Avión Silver Tequila, fresh ginger, strawberry, and agave. Or if you like a little spice with your sweet, get a taste of our Señor Arroyo circa 2010 with Altos Añejo Tequila, pineapple, thyme, and jalapeño.

Celebrating Shaw & Its Historic Main Street

A Taste of Shaw returned to the Howard Theater this past week, and the city’s Best New American Restaurant joined the party with one of our favorite craft cocktails. The Farmers & Distillers crew was in the house mixing our American Whiskey Buck, a smooth blend of Founding Spirits American Whiskey, lemon, ginger, and cane syrup.

This Shaw neighborhood annual celebration brings together a who’s who of DC’s thriving dining scene. Guests enjoyed unlimited sips and noshes throughout the evening from over 20 local restaurants and bars, plus dancing to live music by internationally-renowned Ethiopian artist Yehunie Belay and his band.

It was a very festive night to celebrate the amazing Shaw neighborhood, which won the 2016 Great American Main Street Award, the country’s Oscar for community leadership in renewing traditional downtown areas across the U.S. Proceeds from the event support the continued economic revitalization and preservation of Shaw Main Streets, which has helped bring about the transformation of this historic DC neighborhood since 2003.

Joining Taste of the Nation to End Childhood Hunger

On April 9th, Farmers & Distillers and Founding Spirits attended Taste of the Nation at the National Building Museum in downtown DC.

Joining 80 area restaurants, Farmers & Distillers served one of our guest favorites, our delicious Crunchy Ahi Tuna Bites. Founding Spirits was in the event VIP Lounge mixing and serving our Suffering Candidate, a smoky, yet refreshing craft cocktail made with our Founding Farmers Rye Whisky and mingled with the lighter botanical notes of our Founding Farmers Gin.

Taste of the Nation is the culinary event organized by Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign that highlights the nation’s finest talent in the food and drink industry, all united under one roof for one cause: ending childhood hunger.

In the U.S., one in six children struggle with hunger. No Kid Hungry unites teachers, chefs, community leaders, parents, lawmakers, and CEOs to help solve childhood hunger. They work to connect kids in need with nutritious food, including teaching families to learn how to cook healthy, affordable meals.

No Kid Hungry has fed 775 million meals to children, a remarkable milestone made possible from fundraising events like Taste of the Nation.

Chocolate Cherry Treats for Our Cherry Blossom Lovers

Join Farmers Fishers Bakers and Farmers & Distillers to celebrate DC’s famous cherry blossoms.

Every year, the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW), highlights the area’s vibrant and diverse restaurant scene for the over 1.5 million visitors to the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The Cherry Picks Restaurant Program is now in its 16th year.

This festival celebrates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Japan to the U.S. that bring beautiful blooms to DC’s Tidal Basin every spring. We are joining the celebration with some cherries of our own.

Our pastry team has outdone themselves with a Chocolate Cherry Pie with White Chocolate Vanilla Sauce. The dessert will be available throughout the festival at Farmers Fishers Bakers and Farmers & Distillers.

This year’s festival runs from March 20-April 15. Participating restaurants in the Cherry Picks program will highlight items from their seasonal, springtime menus.
