Explore Your Hometown Eats with Restaurant Week

August can be a rough month for DC locals. It’s usually unbearably hot and humid, and many of our friends and family have managed to skip town. One great way to beat the heat and enjoy our great city this month? Take a stay-cation from the daily grind and explore our hometown eats during Restaurant Week.

From August 13-19, Farmers Restaurant Group will be participating in this annual tradition at five of our DC area restaurants: MoCo’s Founding Farmers (*note: MoCo runs from August 10-19), Founding Farmers Tysons, Farmers Fishers BakersFarmers & Distillers, and our newest location, Founding Farmers Reston Station. Each restaurant will offer a special three-course lunch for $22 and dinner for $35 – both menus will include one of our delicious desserts.

About 250 local restaurants will join Restaurant Association Metropolitan Week in what is one of the best food offerings of the year, and a great way to enjoy DC in August.

Join us and give yourself a late summer in-town break. It is sure to bring a breath of fresh air into an otherwise muggy season. We always recommend getting a reservation, if possible.

*Founding Farmers DC, located at 1924 Pennsylvania Ave., is not taking part in Restaurant Week 2018.

Joining DC’s Biggest Annual Tennis Competition

Farmers & Distillers is joining DC tennis fans at the city’s annual Citi Open next week.

This year’s Citi Open includes a special 50th Anniversary Kickoff party on Friday, July 27th from 7pm-10pm at the Rock Creek Tennis Center, where we will be serving one of our guest favorites, FF’s Glazed Bacon Lollis. Our Founding Spirits team will be mixing up our Farmer Jon cocktail. Tickets for the kickoff party are available here.

Founding Spirits is the spirit sponsor throughout the weeklong competition, from Saturday, July 28th– Sunday, August 5th, where we will be mixing up our specialty cocktail, the Founding Spirits Mule (mint, ginger, lime, FS Vodka), as well as other cocktails made with Founding Spirits Vodka, Founding Spirits American Whiskey, and Founding Farmers Rye Whisky.

Expert mixologists from Farmers & Distillers are also hosting a special tailgate mixology contest on Friday, August 3, from 6:30pm-9pm. Striving for the best classic Tom Collins, Farmers & Distillers will be competing with bartending friends at Service Bar, The Salt Line, Colada Shop, Archipelago, and Copycat Co.

Tickets for the competition or any of the special events are available here.

The Citi Open, formerly known as the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, has been part of summertime in DC since 1969. Each year, proceeds benefit the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation, which works to improve the lives of DC-area youth, particularly those from lower-income communities, through educational and community-based activities, including tennis. Farmers & Distillers also participated in the kickoff event last year.

So, come on by. Whether you need breakfast near the convention center, dinner after your MLB Fanfest workout drills, a cool lunch near Nationals Park, a feast of a delicious buffet brunch before the Sunday SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game or the Legends & Celebrity Softball Game, or you just want to swing by and grab a hot cup of our First Bake Blend Compass Coffee with Chef Joe’s house-made special MLB FanFest Donut.

New Menus for Downtown Diners Just in Time for the 4th

The week-long Fourth of July festivities just got even better as Farmers & Distillers has released all new menus that feature many of our restaurant specialties and guest favorites, including some big news: more beloved choices from our sibling restaurants.

Diners will notice the addition of Founding Farmers Reuben Melt and Farmers Fishers Bakers Roasted Vegetable sandwich, as well as our Founding Farmers perennial guest favorite starter, Glazed Bacon Lollis.

Also of interest is our Southern Fried Chicken & Donut, a delicious nod to the famous Founding Farmers Chicken & Waffles. Using Bell & Evans chicken, Farmers & Distillers is offering our fried chicken with a twist. For lunch and dinner, instead of a waffle on the side, it comes with one of our maple glazed donuts, made fresh in small batches throughout the day. Be sure to save room for both. Breakfast Chicken & Waffles will be available on the breakfast menu.

Steak House choices, including select cuts of beef, are now primarily coming from family-owned J.W. Treuth, who work directly with Pennsylvania cattle farmers to ensure we are getting the highest quality meat. There are also delicious and sustainable seafood choices, a great grouping of burgers and sandwiches, and some of the best garden-fresh salads in town.

Everyone has their own comfort foods. This menu shares some of our Co-Owner Dan Simons’ favorites, such as the IMPOSSIBLE Meatloaf, a tasty vegetarian recipe using the plant-based IMPOSSIBLE Burger served with mashed potatoes and sautéed green vegetables, and our Spaghetti Squash Pomodoro, a delicious medley of roasted squash, roasted garlic tomato sauce, and pecorino.

Other highlights include our hand-pulled Chinese shop style noodles, an array of noodle dishes with lamb, beef & pork meatballs, chicken, or beef combinations. Of course, we will continue to have a whole host of our fresh, house-made donuts, including a new favorite flavor, cinnamon roll.

As always, our craft cocktail menu is sure to delight many with a creative, yet classic array of drinks, many made with our very own Founding Spirits, distilled here in-house, including our award winning craft vodka and Arroyo’s “Never Bitter” Amaro.

With all of our menus, we work hard to make sure there is something for everyone and we continue to make everything from scratch using ingredients primarily sourced from American family farmers we know.

However you plan to spend this Star-Spangled Banner time of year, we have new choices and old favorites, including cool and tasty drinks, and delicious food. We are also super close to all of the Fourth of July celebrations on the mall!

Come on down and check out our new menus. If possible, we recommend making a reservation.

Walking to the DC Convention Center for The RAMMY Awards Gala

It was a big night for DC’s hospitality industry last night with the annual RAMMY Awards Gala. Our family of restaurants team were delighted to walk a block down the street from Farmers & Distillers to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and join our area’s fashionable restaurant industry foodies, about 2,400 of them, to celebrate the city’s big winners.

We brought along our Founding Spirits team to mix some of DC’s favorite cocktails, including our Cucumber Delight, a light and refreshing mix of our award-winning Founding Spirits Vodka and ginger liqueur, cucumber, cantaloupe, and lemon. As one of our most popular cocktails, also served at Founding Farmers, our Cucumber Delight has quite a fan club. It was the perfect craft cocktail to add to the evening’s celebrations.

In addition, this year’s festivities also included two important no’s for the hospitality industry: single-use plastic straws and Initiative #77. Our parent company, Farmers Restaurant Group, continues to support our employees working to save tips and vote no on Initiative #77.

We have also just launched a campaign to eliminate single-use plastic straws across the DMV. Our Last Straw is seeking partners in the local restaurant and hospitality industry to commit to stop serving plastic straws and make the switch to paper or to no straw at all when the beverage doesn’t need it. We are also seeking personal pledges to #StopSucking and join the movement to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics.

Kathy Hollinger, President & CEO of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, announced the efforts of Our Last Straw, saying we all need to work together to 86 plastic straws starting now, which meant that no plastic straws were used at the gala. She also encouraged restaurants and individuals to take action by joining the Our Last Straw coalition.

Calling All Campari Lovers, Negroni Week is Here

June 4th marks the start of a very special season for Campari lovers: Negroni Week.

Across Farmers Restaurant Group, we love this annual opportunity to serve delicious cocktails for a cause. This year’s benefit is No Kid Hungry, which is a movement of teachers, chefs, community leaders, parents, lawmakers, and CEOs with one shared belief: No kid in America should go hungry.

We are also pretty psyched to wow Negroni lovers, as well as newbies to the Negroni scene, with a few of our spins on this classic cocktail. While a traditional Negroni is made with gin, a bitter aperitif (such as Campari), sweet vermouth, and finished with an orange twist, our Managing Partner of Beverage & Distillery Jon Arroyo, has come up with some very special handcrafted alternatives.

Our Negroni cocktails use our very own Founding Spirits, including Gold Medal Winner Founding Spirits Arroyo’s “Never Bitter” Amaro. We will be serving three Negroni-inspired craft cocktails from June 4-10 at Founding Farmers, Farmers & Distillers, and Farmers Fishers Bakers:

Negroni Sour is a smooth and creamy mix of our Gold Medal Winner, Founding Spirits Arroyo’s “Never Bitter” Amaro, Founding Farmers Gin, Campari, lemon, orange, and egg white.

Negroni Swizzle is a delightful mix of Founding Spirits Arroyo’s “Never Bitter” Amaro, Founding Farmers Gin, Campari, cinnamon, and lemon.

The Silent Negroni includes Founding Spirits Arroyo’s “Never Bitter” Amaro, Mezcal El Silencio Espadin, Campari, and Pamplemousse Rose.

If this trio of taste isn’t enough to get you out and about, perhaps and you can have a Negroni Week party of your own and order some of our award-winning Founding Spirits online. Sponsor Imbibe Magazine has lots of recipes online and even Negroni week t-shirts to order.

Negroni Week is an annual international fundraiser put on by Imbibe magazine and Campari. To date, they have collectively raised nearly $1.5 million for charitable causes. No Kid Hungry is ending childhood hunger through effective programs that provide kids with the food they need.

SAVOR & Sip Six Selections from Alewerks

Great news, beer lovers. Farmers & Distillers is pre-gaming what The Washington Post describes as “the gold standard” of beer festivals, SAVOR.

On Tuesday, May 29th from 5-7pm, we are hosting a Tap Takeover featuring six selections from Alewerks Brewery Company to celebrate. Three Alewerks brews will be available for tasting: Superb IPA, Chesapeake Pale Ale, and Tavern Brown Ale. And we will offer three limited releases for purchase on draft: Jalapeño Weekend Lager, Pancake House Stout, and Secret Admirer DIPA.

Head on down to DC’s Mt Vernon Square to our bar and Pleasure Garden on Tuesday night for a small taste of what will be coming your way at SAVOR.

This year’s SAVOR – held June 1-2 at the nearby National Building Museum – will host 90 small and independent craft breweries from around the country showcasing 181 beers, each one thoughtfully paired with a small plate that will dazzle your palate. Tickets are available online.

What’s A ZooFari?

Last night, Farmers & Distillers joined nearly 100 of the top DC area restaurants and vintners for a premier culinary event in a very unusual setting: the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. In the wild habitats of so many of our favorite resident animals, guests were wined and dined at an unforgettable fundraiser to support our zoo and all of its amazing species.

ZooFari included exotic animal encounters, food sculptors, and a silent auction featuring exclusive paintings made by DC’s famous panda family Mei Xiang, Tian Tian, and Bei Bei. Guests were given after-hours access to the Small Mammal House and the Reptile Discovery Center. In addition to the growls of lions and the calls of orangutans, the evening included live entertainment from the chef that rocks, DJ Chef—champion of the Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen— and renowned dance band DC Fusion, as well as classically trained violinist Ben Hoyt.

Part of the ZooFari experience included food and beverage tastings from top DC culinarians. Our Farmers & Distillers team was on hand, hanging with the animals and the animal lovers, while serving one of our house favorites, Crunchy Ahi Tuna Bites. It was a roaring good time.

Get Your Soft-Shell Crabs at Farmers & Distillers

Farmers & Distillers is celebrating the end of spring and the start of summer with two soft-shell crab dishes.

That’s right. It is soft-shell crab season here in the nation’s capital. We all know our fine neighbors in Maryland are famous for their delicious crabs. Early in the season, those crabs are harvested at peak time and make for some of the region’s very best culinary offerings.

We are serving a soft-shell crab sandwich for $18 and an entrée for $30. Our Maryland soft-shell crabs are lightly battered and fried. The sandwich includes our famous bacon, lettuce and tomato, on a house-made bun, with a side of our tasty tartar sauce and choice of one of our crop sides. Our entrée includes two Maryland soft-shell crabs, served with a choice of two of our crop sides and our tasty house-made tartar sauce.

Both are delicious ways to celebrate this special time of year and will be available for a limited time only. So, scurry down to Mt Vernon Square for some tasty soft-shells. If possible, we recommend making a reservation.

Memorial Day Brunch In the Midst of All of the Weekend Festivities

Memorial Day weekend not only marks the beginning of summer for most, it is a time of gathering with family and friends and remembrance of our nation’s fallen heroes.

What better place to gather and remember than around a brunch table in the heart of downtown DC at Farmers & Distillers. We are located in the midst of all of DC’s Memorial Day national celebrations, from the largest Memorial Day parade in the country to the National Memorial Day Concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol to Rolling Thunder. We are also steps away from all of our National Mall memorials, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial.

If you are planning your weekend around some of these activities and memorials, consider adding a rest stop at Farmers & Distillers. Come in to cool down and fuel up with our famous brunch on Saturday, Sunday, and Memorial Day Monday. It is a great place to enjoy some downtime with family and friends.

Our Farmers Market Buffet Brunch is a bounty of delicious food with traditional breakfast fare such as French toast and bacon, a hot items & carving table, a cold table ripe with luscious salads, and lots of passed decadence.

We also have the best Bloody Mary in town, according to Washington City Paper and an amazing array of craft cocktails made with our very own spirits we distill in-house at our Founding Spirits. These include some delightful shared drinks that are worth the trip alone.

If a buffet brunch isn’t your thing, our sibling restaurant, Founding Farmers DC on nearby Pennsylvania Avenue, has a sit-down, a la carte style service that includes our ever-popular Chicken & Waffles made breakfast-style with scrambled eggs, we also have French toast, benedicts, buttermilk pancakes, and our famous applewood smoked bacon.

All of Farmers Restaurant Group will welcome guests in all seven of our restaurants for the three-day long weekend. Voted as a top DC Best Brunch spot by Washingtonian Magazine readers and Washington City Paper’s Best of DC, our brunch menus vary some by location. Our Farmers Market Buffet Brunch is also served at Farmers Fishers Bakers on the Georgetown Waterfront, at Founding Farmers Tysons, Reston Station, and King of Prussia in Pennsylvania. MoCo’s Founding Farmers in Potomac, MD has our sit-down, a la carte style service.

Whatever your Memorial Day weekend brunch needs are, we are pretty confident that one of our restaurants will meet them. If possible, we recommend making a reservation.
